Caring for your granite countertop

Care & Maintenance

Cleaning

Maintaining the lustrous appearance of granite surfaces is very easy to do. Simply clean the area regularly with a non-abrasive cleaning sponge, mild soap, and warm water. It is important to use cleaners specifically formulated for stone countertops. Many general purpose cleaners contain acidic and alkaline ingredients, abrasives, ammonia, and bleach that can break down sealers and damage natural stone. Avoid using bleach, vinegar, abrasive cleaners or ammonia on your Granite surface. For general daily cleaning, we recommend using a product that says specifically on the label “for use on natural stone.” These cleaners are available at most hardware stores and some grocery stores. Give us a call at (246) 428-2920 for further information on these products.

Hot Items

Granite Natural Stone is very heat-resistant. However, placing extremely hot items directly on your countertop for prolonged periods may result in the sealant being removed or damaged. To avoid this, we recommend that hot items are placed on a hot pad or trivet.

Re-sealing

All stone counters purchased from Fiberpol are given a complimentary initial seal with the installation. In order to guarantee that the original beauty of your granite countertop is maintained, we recommend that your counters are resealed approximately every three years. Fiberpol offers you this service.

FAQs

1. What is Granite Natural Stone?

Granite Natural Stone is an igneous rock, formed from magma, which originated from the earth’s core. The durability, strength and hardness of Granite make it an ideal choice for working surfaces in homes, offices, hotels and numerous other applications.

2. What products should be used to clean Granite?

Granite surfaces should only be cleaned with cleaners specially formulated for natural stone surfaces. For general daily cleaning, we recommend using a product that says specifically on the label “for use on natural stone.” These cleaners are available at most hardware stores and some grocery stores. Many general purpose cleaners contain acidic and alkaline ingredients, abrasives, ammonia and bleach, and they can break down sealers and damage the natural stone, which is porous without the sealant.

Avoid using bleach, vinegar, abrasive cleaners or ammonia on your granite surface, as these will etch the surface.

3. Can Granite withstand heat?

Although Granite itself is heat resistant, placing extremely hot items directly on your granite countertop for an extended period of time will result in the sealant being damaged. To avoid this problem, we recommend that hot items are placed on a hot pad or trivet.

4. Does Granite scratch easily?

Granite is not easily scratched, however, if an extremely hard object is dragged along the surface, damage can occur.

5. How thick is Granite?

Granite supplied by Fiberpol is usually 1¼” thick.

6. Are the joints in Granite visible?

Visible joints are guaranteed with natural stone surfaces. However, we fabricate our counters from large slabs, necessitating fewer joints. Our fabrication department takes care to ensure that all joints are discreetly positioned.

7. What is the difference between Granite and Quartz?

Granite is a natural stone, while Quartz is an engineered stone, composed of over 90 percent pure quartz crystals that are coupled with high-performance, stain-resistant polymers. This makes Quartz a less porous surface than Granite. Quartz is also more uniform in appearance, while Granite has the natural beauty of unpredictable veins and streaks in each slab.

8. How does the price of Granite compare with Quartz?

Most of the Granites we supply are in the standard price range, which is approximately 10 percent less than Quartz. However, there are some which will cost the same as our Quartz material.

9. Do I have to seal my Granite counters after installation?

All stone counters purchased from Fiberpol are given a complementary initial seal with the installation. We seal our counters using the highest quality sealers in the industry to ensure maximum protection. In order to maintain the beauty of your Granite Natural Stone countertops, we recommend that your counters are resealed every three to five years. Our Restoration Service department will contact you when your counters are due to be resealed.
